Abstract

"Environment: The Science Behind the Stories, Brief Version" is an introductory textbook that uses case studies and real data to demonstrate the role of science in solving pressing environmental problems. Dynamic central case studies are integrated throughout each chapter, capturing readers' attention and providing them with a contextual framework on which to build their understanding of concepts in environmental science. Science Behind the Story boxes explain how scientists know what they know about environmental problems, while opposing viewpoints on contentious environmental issues allow readers to hear both sides of the story. With only 14 chapters, the book f1 f00 avoids the encyclopedic approach of other textbooks on the market and instead offers only the essential concepts, theories, and principles of environmental science. In particular, the authors have condensed the material on environmental policy, agriculture, atmosphere, and water, providing the reader with the essential material they need in a more concise, affordable format. An Introduction to Environmental Science, Environmental Economics and Policy, Chemistry, Energy, and Environmental Systems, Ecology and Evolution, Human Population Growth, Soils and Agriculture, Toxicology and Environmental Health, Atmospheric Science, Air Pollution, and Climate Change, Marine and Freshwater Resources, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, Land Use, Forest Management, and Creating Livable Cities, Nonrenewable Energy Sources and Their Environmental Impacts, Renewable Energy Sources, Waste Management. For all readers interested in using case studies and real data to demonstrate the role of science in solving pressingenvironmental problems.}

Abstract

One of the few lab books available in the field, Environmental Science is designed to provide environmental scientists with active learning situations that demonstrate the impacts of interactions between humans and the environment. It encourages readers to reflect on real life conditions and the connection to the environment and sustainability. Emphasis is placed on writing and communication through lab reports, presentations, and real-world scenarios. Environmental scientists will be able to apply concepts in the lab and gain a stronger understanding of the field.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Geographic information is a key element for our modern society. Put s- ply, it is information whose spatial (and often temporal) location is fun- mental to its value, and this distinguishes it from many other types of data, and analysis. For sustainable development, climate change or more simply resource sharing and economic development, this information helps to - cilitate human activities and to foresee the impact of these activities in space as well as, inversely, the impact of space on our lives. The Inter- tional Symposium on Spatial Data Handing (SDH) is a primary research forum where questions related to spatial and temporal modelling and analysis, data integration, visual representation or semantics are raised. The first symposium commenced in 1984 in Zurich and has since been organised every two years under the umbrella of the International Geographical Union Commission on Geographical Information Science (http://www. igugis. org). Over the last 28 years, the Symposium has been held in: st 1 - Zürich, 1984 nd 2 - Seattle, 1986 rd 3 - Sydney, 1988 th 4 - Zurich, 1990 th 5 - Charleston, 1992 th 6 - Edinburgh, 1994 th 7 - Delft, 1996 th 8 - Vancouver, 1998 th 9 - Beijing, 2000 th 10 - Ottawa, 2002 th 11 - Leicester, 2004 th 12 - Vienna, 2006 th This book is the proceedings of the 13 International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling.
